Drink a toast to Lanzarote’s fine wines

September 28, 2008

While you are enjoying your stay at Sands Beach Resort Hotel, the selection of bars and restaurants will be pleased to introduce you to a few of the many fine varieties of wine produced in Lanzarote. The combination of volcanic soil and hot weather produces some very special grapes, and there are several vineyards around the island that welcome visitors to learn about the proud history of wine making, and of course to taste the end result. As you travel around the island you will notice that vines are grown in a special way, in small hollows in the ground with a low wall in front of them to protect them from the harsher winds, these beds are called Gerias.

Bodega

Lets look at 2 vineyards, or bodegas as they are called in Spain, both with a big reputation. El Grifo is at the centre of Lanzarote, and one of the oldest bodegas in Spain, Dating back to 1775, it has been passed down through the same family and prides itself on using traditional methods assisted by the latest technology. The 61.5 hectares site includes a museum that attracts 60,000 visitors a year and a museum with 4,000 books about the art of wine making.

A more modern bodega is the Stratvs at la Geria in Yaiza, it’s a mere baby at just 150 years old. In recent years it has undergone a complete make over and now has one of the most state of the art brewing centres in europe. Don’t let that deter you, the basic ingredients and method of making wine are the same and the taste will convince you that they have made a good marriage of old and new. There is a restaurant on site so you can test the wine against a good meal, and tours can be arranged to see the wine making process.

If you check with reception at Sands Beach Resort Hotel, they can advise you of organised coach trips to a bodega, let someone else drive and enjoy a taste of Lanzarote. If you are out and about around the island, ask for a local wine, you wont be dissapointed. Cheers

A Lanzarote family hotel with lots to offer

September 18, 2008

Family fun
A holiday means different things to different people, the trick is keeping them all happy. That’s why Sands Beach Resort is such a good choice for families, it’s a self contained paradise on the beachfront.

Maybe all you want to do is lay out in the sun and relax, but the youngsters are full of energy and need entertaining. That’s no problem, we have a Mini Club with regular activities such as face painting around the Mai Tai pool, and out entertainers will make sure they have a good time.

For the older and more independent children, there is a tennis court, or lessons in wind surfing on our safe sea water lagoon, and scuba diving trial sessions. Sands Beach Resort has been planned to perfection, it works its way down to the lagoon via the 6 pool plazas, and walkways are wide and ramped to ensure no problems with pushchairs and buggies.

We have even provided a short cut out to the wonderful beaches of Costa Teguise, over the wooden bridge across the lagoon, and you find yourself on the beachfront promenade, lit up at night for a gentle walk into town. The beaches here slope gently and are in a series of coves, making them safe for bathing and swimming, life guards are always on hand for that extra reassurance.

If that has whet your appetite, find out more about our holiday options and check our holiday planner om our main website. See you soon.

Yacht World heads for Lanzarote

September 8, 2008

Puerto Calero

It’s a first for Spain and it’s happening in Lanzarote. The 2008 World Championship for TP52 yachts, will bring colour, splendour and fast paced action to Puerto Calero from October 20 to 25. Already sails have been hoisted in the waters around the island as teams arrive to practice, and the starting line up will have 20 competitors from 12 different countries, including U.S.A, Great Britain, Russia and Argentina.

Puerto Calero marina is just past Puerto del Carmen and barely an hour from Costa Teguise and Sands Beach Resort Hotel. The marina is always busy but over the next few weeks it will be frantic as the worlds media descend to cover the racing. Puerto Calero is already the winter base for the Ericsson Racing Team, and the superb weather and seas of Lanzarote have been a major factor in luring the championship to Spain for the first time.

Lanzarote is a perfect base for water sports, Sands Beach Resort with its beachfront location, makes full use of this and offers wind surfing and diving lessons among its full programme of events. Like all the island, Sands Beach Resort loves to welcome families and show them that sun, sea and sand are just the start of a Lanzarote holiday.
