Celebrate Canarian Day in Costa Teguise

May 26, 2009

Costa TeguiseExperience the history, culture and party spirit of Lanzarote on Saturday 30 May , Dia de Canarias, the national holiday of the Canary Islands. Costa Teguise has a great mix of ancient and modern, and there will be plenty of events going on all day, with traditional food, costumes, and of course, music, to the fore.

One of the big gathering points will be Playa del Jabillo, to the west of the village, where the annual fun swim takes place from 9am. It’s a 1,200 km sea swim for all ages, with t shirts and paella for all entrants. Even though you are too late to enter, there will be plenty of activities going on around the beach, and it’s a good way to kick off a very special and colourful day in the Canarian calendar.

Ironman Lanzarote and Sands Beach Resort, what a team.

May 26, 2009

Nico Ward MunozEven professional triathletes need that extra boost, Nicolas (Nico) Ward Munoz took on the Lanzarote Ironman contest last weekend with the logo of Sands Beach Resort Hotel on his chest, and the website address on his shorts. It was with great pride that we saw him finish 6th in the mens competition, nice to know we played our part.

A 3.8 km swim, 180 kms cycling, and finally,42.2 kms running, maked this the toughest and most respected of all the World Ironman contests. Each year Puerto del Carmen is the start and finish point for some 1,200 plus competitors, professional and keen amateurs, as many thousands swarm the route to cheer them on. This year was as exciting as ever, and in an amazing feat, last years winners came through victorious again. Scotlands Bella Bayliss took the ladies honours in 9 hours and 54 minutes (yes it really does take that long) and Belgians Bert Jammaer was top man in 8 hours and 54 minutes.

Lanzarote born Gregorio Morales was a popular fourth placed competitor, but Nico had plenty of support from Costa Teguise and his favourite beachfront family hotel. Don’t worry, we don’t expect our guests to do anything more athletic than swim in our 6 outdoor pools, or sample our gym or tennis courts. But if you want a challenge Lanzarote has many to offer.

Barcelona coach heads to Lanzarote

May 17, 2009

Pep GardiolaLanzarote always attracts the best in all walks of life, so it’s no surprise that Pep Gardiola, coach of newly crowned La Liga champions Barcelona, is among a group of top European football coaches at the 4th annual Football Training Clinic in June.

Gardiola was a surprise choice to take over the Barcelona hot seat at the start of the season, just 38 and a product of the clubs youth system, he was widely respected for his coaching at lower levels of the club, but could he cope at the highest level? Guardiola has impressed even his sternest doubters by leading Barcelona to the Spanish League title and now faces manchester United in the Champions league final.

The Lanzarote football clinic runs from June 5 to 7 in Yaiza and also features Unai Emery, Jose Luis Mendilibar, and Francisco Seirullo. Cutting edge tactics will be discussed and kicked around but the top coaches will no doubt take some time out to enjoy the wonderful scenery and climate of Lanzarote. Sands Beach Resort Hotel in Costa Teguise is also a big draw for sport and fitness fans, with 6 pools, and a beachfront setting, it has an amazing range of sport on offer.
