You’d be mad not to visit Lanzarote

September 25, 2009

Noel Coward famously sung “Mad Dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun” well there was a touch of English madness in the Lanzarote air as the Monster Raving Looney Party launched their new overseas branch in Costa Teguise.

This far from serious political group got an invite from former member Dick Knowles, founder of British FM radio in Lanzarote, a 15 year resident on the island. The leader of the Monster Raving Looney Party, Alan “Howling Laud” Hope flew in to open the new party headquarters at The Bulldog Bar in Costa Teguise.

Alan is an old friend of the late lamented party leader Screaming Lord Sutch, and was met at Arrecife airport by party supporters dressed in silly fancy dress costumes. The first proposal from the new Lanzarote branch was to export cans of sunshine back to the UK, marketed as Canned Heat.

As you can see the British sense of humour is thriving in the suuny surrounds of Lanzarote, and with great family friendly beachfront settings like Sands Beach Resort Hotel, you really would be mad not to visit Costa Teguise.

Get up and dance, it’s Costa de Musicas 2009

September 18, 2009

All eyes were on Sands Beach Resort Hotel for the official press launch of Costa de Musicas 2009, the big Lanzarote musical event held each year in Costa Teguise. The beachfront family hotel was the setting for the formal announcements, over the course of Friday 25 and Saturday 26 September the music will take centre stage on and around Playa Bastian.

There will be plenty of fun for families and people of all ages as the beat takes over, and dancing on the sand becomes the thing to do. In the daytime the action centres around Pueblo Marinero where DJ’s and live radio broadcasts will get everyone into the party mood from 3pm to 8pm. Then as the night takes over, it’s down to the beach for the live bands.

On Friday the line up includes, Mamba Beat and Zurych, Saturday is led by Mo Horizons and La Selva Sur. Dancing late into the night is infectious and will have Costa Teguise letting its hair down and showing visitors one of the things the island of Lanzarote is famous for.

New bus link to Famara from Costa Teguise

September 16, 2009

There are many ways to get around Lanzarote, one of the cheapest and less restrictive is the island bus service. Don’t let the name Arrecife Bus miss lead you, although the main depot and interchange is in the capital city Arrecife, these large white coaches cover the island.

The latest route to be added links Costa Teguise with Famara on the north coast, it runs every 2 hours, Sundays and fiesta days included, and goes from the bus stop just along from Sands Beach Resort Hotel - the turnaround point in Costa Teguise.

The new number 31 route takes you up through Teguise town, the ancient Lanzarote capital, and on to La Caleta on the Famara coast. Exploring can be fun in Lanzarote, small towns and villages are warm and inviting and the food and drink is incredibly cheap.

Canada, latest recruits to Lanzarote

September 11, 2009

When you have an island as special as Lanzarote, it’s only fair to share it with the world. That’s why Canadians will now have the chance to enjoy the sun, beaches and rugged landscapes of Lanzarote.

As of winter 2009, Toronto will be linked to Arrecife by regular flights, via Madrid or Barcelona, although there are already plans for direct flights. Total Vacations are the tour operators running the flights, and the deal struck with the Lanzarote government, includes promotional materials in Toronto and features for in flight publications.

A trial link was set up in 2007, attracting 2,384 visitors between January and April, but this time with a big push behind the connections, the numbers are expected to really take off.

Broken Embraces lures UK to Lanzarote

September 1, 2009

After sneak previews in Lanzarote, the new Pedro Almoldovar film, Broken Embraces has opened in the UK to warm reviews, and although Penelope Cruz looks stunning as always, the scenery of Lanzarote has almost stolen the glory.

Filmed last year in key locations around the island, the cast and crew became enchanted by the natural beauty of Lanzarote, the director Pedro Almoldovar has been happily singing its praises ever since, but now cinema audiences can make up their own minds.

Location filming was spread around the island but places like the natural volcanic bowl at El Golfo couldn’t help but impress with their rugged charms. When you come and visit Lanzarote, allow some time to get out and about to see the coast, the mountain walks and the Timanfaya National Park, where the turbulent volcanic past is brought to life. A good base is essential, Costa Teguise is well placed for all excursions and Sands Beach Hotel Resort can offer trips and travel advice to ensure you see the main sights.
