Ironman, an event for all in Lanzarote

Prepare yourself for a truly amazing event that takes hold of Lanzarote every year. Saturday 22nd May is the annual Ironman competition with 1,550 competitors swimming 3.8 kms, cycling 180 kms, and rounding it off with a 42.2 km run. That’s just the focal point of the event in Puerto del Carmen, all over Lanzarote the build up to the race involves training camps, fitness regimes, and a network of parties and social bashes for the thousands of spectators.

Visitors love to savour the build up to the big day and enjoy the after race celebrations. Of course it helps that the Lanzarote landscape is a perfect partner for this test of endurance. The long stretches of safe bathing beaches, the sun baked open roads and the craggy volcanic hills all play their part in making this one of the most popular Ironman events on the world tour.

    The great thing about this event is that it is not simply entered by professional athletes but local residents who are inspired by seeing others competing and who do it for charities etc. That’s probably what makes it all the more special. Some of those contestants will be out there until midnight when it is the cut off time. So go on and support some of the locals who are first out this year for their first Iron Man and doing it for charity.
