Lanzarote music going underground again
January 30, 2009
One of the most sights in Lanzarote is the Jameos del Aqua, the stunning series of volcanic tubes and caves in the north at el Malpais de la Coruna. Apart from the underground cave with its pool, the above ground centre, built by Ceasar Manrique, is a fitting tribute to the founding father of modern Lanzarote. Now the underground auditorium, worn out of the volcanic rock, is about to open to the public again for concerts in a unique setting.
The natural theatre has been closed since 2001 when rock falls made it unsafe but the Canarian government tourism department has invested 5.5 million euros to restotr it to its former glory. One of the first events scheduled for the auditorium is the screening of the new Penelope Cruz film ”The Broken Embraces” which was filmed in Lanzarote at the end of last year.
In future there will be musical performances that can make full use of the unique acoustics of this cave. As an arts venue, there can be no better setting, and it evokes much of the history and culture of Lanzarote. Sands Beach Resort Hotel reception will be happy to book one of several island tours that will include Jameos del Aqua, it’s all part of the service at this family friendly beachfront hotel.
